WAVING THE FLAG FOR PRIDE: And other Destination Canada news

With June marking the beginning of Pride Season, Destination Canada is encouraging Canadians, including members of the travel trade, to show support by flying a digital Pride Flag offered by organization as a Zoom background throughout the month.

The tourist board (formerly the Canadian Tourism Commission) notes that there is no better time to celebrate and learn about the LGBT movement in Canada.

“We believe that Canada’s diversity is its greatest asset,” says DC. “By embracing diversity, we draw on all of the unique strengths and abilities of Canada’s population. To that end, we are committed to inclusive leadership within our workforce, workplace, and interactions with partners and travellers alike.”

National Indigenous History Month

June is also National Indigenous History Month and Destination Canada is using its Instagram channels to encourage the education and exploration of Indigenous cultures, history, and perspectives. The ongoing campaign is designed to highlight, explore, and recognize the rich and diverse tapestry of Indigenous cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Sustainable tourism

GreenStep and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) have announced the launch of the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge, a new initiative that encourages tourism businesses and destinations across Canada, and globally, to commit to measuring and improving their sustainability performance each year between now and 2030.

Developed in Canada by GreenStep, the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge offers a free online assessment and sustainability score, helping tourism businesses and destinations self-assess on a broad range of sustainability criteria.

By taking the pledge, tourism businesses and destinations will commit to doing two things: measuring their sustainability score annually using the online assessment, and then making a public commitment and goal to improve their score by 2030.

TIAC is hosting an introductory webinar with members about how to take the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge today (June 8) from 2 to 3 p.m. EDT. TIAC members can register by clicking HERE.
