VIRTUALLY THERE: Jordan’s biblical bona fides

River Jordan

From Amman to Petra to the Dead Sea, the Jordan Tourist Board presents a wide range of online touring experiences designed to help keep the spirit of travel to the Middle Eastern nation alive during the pandemic. And with Easter imminent, the JTB is inviting virtual pilgrims, or simply the curious, to visit Jesus Christ’s believed baptism site on the Jordan River.

Available as part of the VisitJordanFromHome.com program, the experience enables users to click on map locations for an interactive augmented reality and 3D experience that includes 360-degree views of more than two dozen sites, including the river, local topography, visitor centre, and various churches. A couple of video clips offer narration.

The area in focus – designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site – is part of the “Bethany Beyond the Jordan” region between the Jordan River and Tal al-Kharrar, which was home to several biblical cities including Sodom, Gomorrah, and Zoar, and has produced several archaeological discoveries from the biblical area. It is also said to be the area where John was living when he baptized Jesus.

In addition to other areas of exploration, such as Petra and Dead Sea, site visitors can also check out various Jordanian museums and archaeological sites, Al Shobak Castle, King Hussein Mosque, the Jordan Hejaz Railway, and more.
