When Jenny Nguyen opened the aptly named The Sports Bra (not a misprint) last spring in Portland, Oregon, it became the only bar in the world dedicated to women’s sports.

Of course, the watering hole is committed to serving great food and drinks, but its mission is to provide a space that supports, empowers, and promotes girls and women in sports and in the community – both on and off the field.

The bar exclusively broadcasts women’s sporting events as well as showcases memorabilia celebrating female athletes, including Serena Williams and Sha’Carri Richardson.

Kids are also welcome at the venue based on the philosophy that “exposing them to women’s sports can have lasting impacts on their understanding of equity in sports and in life.”

The notion extends to food with a made-from-scratch menu that serves pub fare from wings and nachos to burgers, sandwiches, and salads, but also caters to
“vegans, vegetarians, gluten and dairy free folks.”

The drinks menu also features cocktails based on spirits from the women-owned distillery Freeland Spirits, as well as many other women on the tap and wine lists. “Our goal,” says owners, “is to support, promote, and invest in the women who are changing the game.” Not just in sports.

But if that sounds a little too cerebral for a night at the pub, keep in mind that The Sport Bra’s mantra really is a simple one: Drink. Eat. Watch women’s sports.

The establishment is located at 2512 NE Broadway in Portland and is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 to 11. Minors are welcome until 10 p.m.
