I personally don’t need much prompting to remember the musical exploits of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, but a post last weekend from the Facebook account of Canadian guitar blues guitar legend Jeff Healey (himself beyond the grave – how does that happen?) did the trick.

The occasion was the anniversary of Vaughan’s tragic death in a helicopter crash on Aug. 27, 1990, at the age of 35. Eerily, the Dallas-born singer-guitarist had reportedly told bandmates the day before the crash that he had dreamt of attending his own funeral.

Still considered one of rock’s all-time great guitarists, one commentator contends that Vaughan “didn’t actually die – God just wanted guitar lessons.”

I choose to believe that he’s just jamming with Jeff again on a cloud somewhere.

Last week, Austin City Limits also not-so-coincidentally aired an old performance of Vaughan on the show; you can find that online for 60 full minutes of blues-rock bliss, but until then, we offer this 1982 concert rendering of his classic bluesy Texas shuffle, “Pride and Joy.”
