Royal Caribbean’s brands are promising there will never again be bad wi-fi at sea. They’ve just announced they are going all in on Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink satellite internet service, which promises wi-fi connections in staterooms anywhere in the world as strong as in guests’ own homes.
Celebrity Cruises announced that the service will be ready to use on Celebrity’s newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, on September 5, and will roll out across the Celebrity fleet by the end of the year. Royal Caribbean and Silversea Cruises ships will be installing the necessary hardware to have the service available fleet-wide by May 2023.
Starlink has already launched over 3,000 small satellites in low Earth orbit and the plan is to launch 10 times that many, to provide blanket Internet coverage anywhere in the world.
