LISTENING IN: Capeless Heroes – A very Vincy tribute

Stars like Jagger, Bono, and Bon Jovi don’t have a monopoly on music that reflects the coronavirus pandemic; in fact, there are well over 40 songs out there that, for better or worse, fit the theme.

One of the best ones is “Capeless Heroes” by Vincy soca artist Jamesy P, who salutes all the essential workers who are “working overtime to give us peace of mind,” and “risking your life to save mine.”

Born in the small village of Lowmans on the windward side of the main island of St Vincent in the Caribbean, James Morgan achieved minor music success in 2004 with the song “Nookie,” which hit No. 14 in the U.K. and received airplay in Canada as well. Two years ago, he wrote a song celebrating the Toronto Raptors NBA championship.

In this release, Morgan reaches out to the “unsung heroes” of the pandemic, thanking them for their “courageousness” on the front line, all the while delivering a feel-good soca-reggae mix that belies the seriousness of the message.

The result is a song that is utterly infectious – but in a good way! And one that I’d be prepared to listen to outside the confines of COVID-19. — Mike Baginski
