HOTEL COLLAPSE IN CHINA

The death toll in the collapse of a hotel in eastern China near Shanghai was raised to 17 on Wednesday as authorities ended the search and rescue mission. The Siji Kaiyuan Hotel was located in the coastal city of Suzhou, an area that is highly popular with domestic and international visitors and is known for its waterways and gardens which are UNESCO listed.

The cause of the collapse which occurred on Monday afternoon. was under investigation, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The Siji Kaiyuan is a budget hotel that opened in 2018. The hotel was three storeys tall and an online booking site said the it had 54 rooms.

“Although the building itself is not tall, the collapse was not partial. It collapsed in its entirety, after which the structure was crushed into pieces,” said Chen Zhi’ang, a fire service official in charge of the rescue efforts.

Officials said the collapse could be due to some structural modifications made to the property.
