WATER TO GO

24 MAR 2017: The PEI Water Act was released last week, preventing water from being exported from the island.  The move is aimed at water bottle exports and the province has spared two industries from the ban – the beer industry and the the cruise industry.

The draft legislation on the government website says, “Groundwater, surface water, or water obtained from a water supply system, may not be stored or transported for the purpose of removal from the province, except for humanitarian purposes, and or the ordinary carrying of water necessary for travel.”

Cruise ships purchase water from the Charlottetown Harbour Authority, which is purchased from the City of Charlottetown.  The province said that water supplied for cruise ship is minimal, being less than 1% of the city’s total water allotment.
