From a high school ski excursion to introducing the sensational city to my son on a road trip some 40 years later, Quebec has been a constant in my life – a destination I’ve visited multiple times and a bona fide favourite destination. Q is definitely for Quebec.
After all, the city conjures a feeling of being in France without leaving the continent.
In Europe, 400 years may not be old, but in North America the novelty is unique and the historic atmosphere – the city is also the most intact fortified city north of Mexico – is a welcome change from the modern world we live in.
Of course, the city is more than a trip to the museum. I’ve skied at Saint-Anne, doddled around the Ile d’Orleans as if through another time, and whale-watched on the St. Lawrence; there was dog sledding in a winter wonderland that could not be made up, and a helicopter ride over the icy St. Lawrence.
And I defy anyone to find better poutine than at Le Chic Shack across from the Chateau Frontenac, crepes than at Au Petit Coin Breton, or farm-to-fork food than Chez Muffy at the Auberge Saint-Antoine (stay there too).
Shamefully, or perhaps hopefully, the Carnaval du Quebec, is still on my list.
Having said and done (or not done) all that, my favourite activity is still wandering the cobbled streets, ramparts and walls, of the upper and lower towns, camera in hand, capturing unique details in every nook and cranny. It’s art and history all in one.
When I first visited, a roll or two of film had to suffice; today, digital technology renders the hobby endless.
As is the debate over whether the city is better seen during the day or at night. In summer or winter. I’m glad to say I’m still working on the answer.
Honourable mention: Queenstown, New Zealand
Bucket list: Qatar
Unlike the song, I have not been everywhere, so please don’t wonder why one of your favourites wasn’t one of mine. Instead, tell me at baginski@travelindustrytoday.com. I’m already thinking about my next list.
