Are long cruises relics of the past? Are shipboard medical centers up to handing a covid-19 outbreak? Who’s going to pay the travel costs of a guest denied boarding?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking a series of pointed questions about how cruise lines could safely operate in the covid-19 era. The answers may determine not only when cruises could resume but whether they can even visit US ports in the near future. Not only cruise lines, but the public as well are being urged to weigh in on the issues.

The CDC has already extended its no-sail order for US ports though the end of September. That now appears likely to be extended well into the fall, because the deadline for submissions to CDC’s questions is Sept. 21.
