ROUND-UP: April 3-10, 2023

A new agreement between Canada and the UAE last week promised more flights between the destinations; Canada Jetlines refocussed attention on sun routes; El Al delivered “not the best news” to Canadian agents, and a TD survey revealed Canadian habits when it comes to travel insurance.

NEWS

Canada and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have announced the conclusion of an expanded air transport agreement that allows 21 flights per week for each country – 50% more flights than the maximum number previously possible. The new rights under the expanded agreement are available for use by airlines immediately. Currently Air Canada, Emirates and Etihad serve the market directly.

As part of a new brand identity, NYC & Company, New York’s official destination marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau is now known as New York City Tourism + Conventions. The destination’s new brand system is aimed at travellers from around the world and includes a new brand strategy and comprehensive visual identity system comprising a new logo, color standards, typography, art direction and graphic elements.

BORDERS

The Aruba Tourism Authority has announced the implementation of seamless travel to Aruba through the use of verifiable digital credential technology (DTC). The innovation will soon allow travellers to fulfill government immigration requirements before boarding their flight using a simplified process that eliminates the need to manually enter information from paper travel documents. Using a DTC, passengers can consent to share any of their relevant data directly from their digital wallet on their mobile device to multiple entities across journeys, from the government at the port of entry to other touchpoints such as hotels or car rental.

BY THE NUMBERS

A TD Insurance survey says the majority of Canadians (65%) plan on taking a trip in the near future, but only 36% of those planning to travel intend to purchase both medical and cancellation travel insurance. Among those likely to travel in the next year, younger Canadians between the ages of 18 and 34 appear least likely to purchase travel insurance with only 27% saying they intend to buy cancellation and travel medical coverage, compared to 39% of those over the age of 35.

AIR

Canada Jetlines has pressed pause on its domestic routes as the airline refocuses its efforts on sun destinations and leasing its planes, but says it plans to resume in-country flights come fall. The carrier quietly halted its twice-weekly return trips between Toronto and Vancouver and Toronto and Calgary in January after launching commercial operations in September. The carrier continues to offer two return flights per week from Toronto’s Pearson airport to Las Vegas and to Cancun, Mexico. Meanwhile, the carrier says it has signed a letter of intent for its third Airbus A320 aircraft, to be provided by a global aviation lessor with delivery expected by July.

Porter Airlines is adding flight frequency on its new Ottawa-Charlottetown route. Service begins on May 17, but the initial seven weekly round trip flights increase to 11 times weekly during the spring and fall, plus 14 flights per week during the peak summer travel season.

El Al Israel Airlines would like to return to Canada, but there is “no date circled on the calendar” for that to happen, the carrier’s Sr. VP Sales for North America, Marc Cavaliere told an audience of travel agents at the Israeli Consulate in Toronto, and that though he was delivering “not the best news” he would not “perpetuate unrealistic expectations” out of respect. He added that the carrier will continue to work in Canada and is promoting connections through its US gateways. El Al mothballed its Canadian service last October.
