It’s hard not to love Gastown, Vancouver’s stylish and historic downtown neighbourhood, which rivals Granville Island as my traditional go-to spot in the city when visiting from Toronto.
And while Carderos in Coal Harbour is perhaps my favourite overall watering hole, nowhere in the city can rival the sheer variety and choices of Gastown, particularly now during times of social distancing when the district might better be called “patio town.”
Indeed, there over 30 establishments that have patios in the 12-block neighbourhood that runs along Water Street, and about two-thirds of those now boast “extended” spaces, taking advantage of the city’s Temporary Expedited Patio Program (currently in effect through Oct. 31).
And with Vancouver’s mild year-round weather and famously clear skies (lol), any time is a good time to go.
And an added bonus right now is the new “Gastown Unplugged” pop-up music series (banner photo), set in multiple locations throughout the area on Friday and Saturday evenings. Supported by local businesses to help support local artists, the sessions range from jazz to slow jams and everything in between, giving patrons the opportunity to enjoy live music from the comfort of their favourite patio, or while simply walking down the cobblestone streets.
It’s sure to be a blast, er, a gas!
With glass reluctantly in hand we at Travel Industry Today, continue our series on some of the planet’s best bars, patios and rooftop venues. For more articles in the series, click here:
