PUBS & PATIOS:Flying high at Fort Lauderdale’s Sparrow

A new highlight for visitors to Fort Lauderdale can be found, literally, on the 25th floor of the Dalmar Hotel. The Sparrow rooftop bar is the highest in the south Florida city, having opened in May 2019 by the same creative group behind New York’s influential Death & Co.

But rather than the dark and devilish décor of D&C, Sparrow exudes a funky, ‘60s vibe and is creatively designed to evoke a classic period of American travel.

From neon lighting at the bar to modern-inspired furnishings, colour rules on the rooftop, with even the extensive cocktail menu following suit by purposely providing options for every colour of the rainbow (and not shy on the flamingo embellishments).

For those lucky enough to snag a spot outside at the half-indoor, half-outdoor venue – comprised of dining room, lounge, and patio – the view is as mouth-watering as the drinks menu, which also features a variety of beers (including on tap), lengthy wine list wine, and champagne.

The food is big on shareable plates and items range from sushi to salmon from the far-away Faroe Islands, and Korean-style steak with kimchi, not to mention comforting lobster and cheese.

As befits its trendy nature, guests are asked to dress the part (no beachwear, shorts, sandals, etc.); and not to worry if it rains (as it does in Florida), there’s a retractable roof.

At night music and dancing is de rigueur, turning the patio into a giant party.

Named one of the best rooftop bars in the US by Condé Nast, Sparrow is located in (should we say on?) the Dalmar Hotel at 299 N. Federal Hwy. (at NE 3rd St) in downtown Fort Lauderdale and is generally open 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursdays through Saturdays (COVID hours may apply). Happy hour is from 5 to 7.
