PUB CRAWL: The Caledonian a wee taste of Scotland in Toronto

If the Maple Leaf Sports Bar (last week) is a microcosm of Canada in London, then The Caledonian is certainly a slice of Scotland in this country. Indeed, the pub’s marquee even proudly declares its allegiance to the country in Gaelic: Alba gu bràth! Scotland forever!

The street-front moniker also frames a patron’s forthcoming experience:

Scottish Public House & Whiskey Bar, even if the venue is found on the edge of Toronto’s Little Portugal neighbourhood (856 College St. at Ossington) rather than in its waspy core.

Certainly, Scottish beers are on tap – Innis and Tennant, included – but it’s 400 varieties of whisky, some rare, that really stand out, as well as status as an “Ardbeg Embassy” – Canadian “headquarters” for the noted Scottish distiller from the Isle of Islay. A patriotic cocktail menu – Rob Roys, Ardbeg Caesar (scotch and clamato), Vesper Martini (from James Bond), hot toddies, and more – offer a fun twist.

Meanwhile, a literal taste of Scotland is served up with menu items like Scotch eggs, fish and chips, steak pie, and, of course, haggis, neeps & tatties, not to mention traditional sticky toffee pudding.

Open since 2010 and owned and operated by a Scot, The Caledonian is cozy (code for small), but has a patio for when the weather is good. Nevertheless, be prepared to be crowded (which can be part of the atmosphere in a pub, unlike other venues), especially during events, which range from not infrequent tastings (private events can also be booked) to holiday festivities, such as Hogmanay (New Year’s). There’s also traditional live music on Thursday nights starting at 9 (table reservations recommended).

The Caledonian opens daily at 5 p.m. (4 on Fridays and weekends) until midnight (2 a.m., Fridays and Saturdays and 11 on Sundays).

Slàinte mhath (cheers)!
