PATIO SEASON: A cheeky option in Key West

02 AUG 2019: With summer in mind – and glass in hand – we at Travel Industry Today, continue our seasonal series on some of the planet’s best bars, patios and rooftop venues to enjoy during the (hopefully good) weather.

Key West has a reputation as an anything-goes kinda place, and a great place to check out the proceedings is from The Garden of Eden rooftop bar. The twist is, it’s the town’s only clothing optional rooftop bar, where patrons can relax and imbibe in any state of dress, or undress, they wish.

Located on the uppermost level of the more traditional Bull and Whistle, which bills itself as “the oldest open-air bar in Old Town Key West,” at the corner of Duval (otherwise known as the strip) and Caroline, G of E epitomizes the Florida town’s famous free-spirited atmosphere.

It must be stated that “optional” is the key word, and that all visitors (or even most) do not unfrock. It’s also, not surprisingly, a camera/phone-free zone, which may be welcome news to those who wish to unleash their inner buffoon in the buff, fueled by a dance DJ and extensive range of drinks that includes signature cocktails (we suggest trying a Knock Me Naked – fireball, rum chata and soda).

If shedding your shorts isn’t your thing, the main floor Bull is unique in its own right, with décor featuring hand painted murals of people, places and events that make up the colourful background of Key West, plus live day and nighttime entertainment, while the 2nd floor Whistle Bar offers has wraparound patio (New Orleans style) with street views.

The bars are open from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. For more info and two-for-one printable drink coupons.
