07 MAR 2018: Roatan has one of the best coral reefs in the Americas. The great Barrier Reef in Australia is number one in the world of course, but who that’s whole day’s flight, while Roatan is just under four hours from Toronto. For the longest time, divers kept it a secret, but the news is out.
Roatan locals consider this vibrant island as a separate country, but really it is part of Honduras, situated in Central America.
It is located between the islands of Utila and Guanaja, the largest of Bonduras’ Bay Islands although it is only 77 kilometres long and less than 8 km across its widest point. The clear warm water surrounding it is teaming with marine life- and it includes Roatan Marine Park.
I’ve been to Roatan a number of times but the Paradise Beach Hotel was a first.
Set in pretty tropical gardens, it has just been renovated, and has direct access to the famous West Bay Beach. It has two pools, four restaurants, a gym and a dive centre.
There are two sections, the Oceanic is five floors, with a very modern décor, the other section reminds me of the old Colonial Caribbean.
We were in the older section in a first-floor suite, with a huge balcony, overlooking the pool. We loved it. There is a counter with a microwave and frig, and I could see families buying the breakfast package, making a sandwich for lunch, and having dinner out. The staff couldn’t do enough for us, from the front desk, to the nice employee who had to open the safe for us as we were rushing to catch our plane.
They told us we might not have WIFI in that area and have to use the lobby. We actually had very fast WIFI, both in the living room, and on the balcony.
Tom and Dar from Brampton like smaller hotels of under 100 rooms. This time they bought the all-inclusive package, next time, and there will be a next time, they’ll buy the package with breakfast only so they can explore the many little beach restaurants.
“We like the people here, they are genuine. The vendors have to stay outside the posts so you’re not bothered by them.” Dar said “I’ve had hip surgery recently and I’ve found it fine to get around. ”
Weldon, another Canadian from Vancouver said, “We were pleasantly surprised by the food – the seafood was great, and we had ribs that just fell off the bone.”
I managed to stumble into, or swim past all the Canadians who were staying there that week – and they were very happy campers. Those on Sunwing’s all-inclusive package were happy and those who bought the breakfast package only were happy as well.
They liked the resort … saying it reminded them of the old Caribbean, they liked the service, the food, they loved the pretty pool especially when lite at night.
I don’t very often visit a resort where so many people I talk to love it, and the comments about Blue Planet Divers were amazing.
Blue Planet Divers, is one of over 100 dive shops on the Island, but it is a standout. In my travels, I’ve visited many dive shops around the island and around the world and this one is certainly one I’d recommend highly, but don’t take my word for it … Tom’s dive operation started in early 2016 has over 120 reviews and every single one of them is a 5-star review. I’ve never seen that before. Well, except for one I read this morning from someone who had just rented snorkel equipment, asked where to go and complained it was a lousy site, the water was too cold, so you should avoid the shop!
“Tom Nemeth, the owner said “We are committed to showing you all the amazing dive sites in Roatan. We specialize in valet service, small groups, and provide a personalized dive experience with a dedicated and knowledgeable staff.
“We focus on safety, comfort and environmental awareness. Whether you snorkel, dive or continue your PADI education, we have something for everyone. Our friendly and professional staff ensures that your Roatan vacation is a memorable one. We work on one on one with our guests to coordinate anything from accommodations to custom private charters, dive packages, courses and training. We strive to exceed the expectations of our valued guests.”
One group of happy divers said, “Tom Nemeth did a great job with our group There was new equipment, it is well run and safe. We are a mixed group of experienced to novice divers. Two nice new boats and experienced Dive Masters looked after us.”
Another review said,”My wife and I just got back from what we both agree was our most enjoyable dive vacation to date. With over 30 years of diving and more than 500 dives that is saying a lot. From the owner Tom’s attention to detail to Dive Master Sam and his ability to please this shop has perfected customer Service. If you are considering diving in Roatan, Blue Planet Dive shop will not let you down. The quality of their boats and equipment, the water temperature and the amazing dive sites all add up to a great dive experience.”
You can’t ask for more.
