22 JUN 2018: Before you start the emails advising me that this is not a travel story – I know it isn’t. What it is however is a human interest story – or more accurately – a lack of human thought or caring story. A story that can make you weep, or puke, or throw things at how freaking tone deaf people at the White House are. Melania Trump wore a jacket that read “I really don’t care, do u?” as she boarded a flight Thursday to go and visit a facility housing migrant children who have been separated from their parents.
The green, hooded military jacket had the words written graffiti-style on the back.
When asked what message the first lady’s jacket intends to send, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said, “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.”
The media would probably have paid less attention to her clothes, if she had none on. This was, to put the very best spin on it, stupid and thoughtless.
Somewhere during the flight sanity prevailed, and Mrs. Trump had changed to a pale yellow (un-sloganed) jacket before the plane landed in McAllen, Texas, for a visit to the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center, which houses 55 migrant children.
However, astonishingly, Melania Trump again wore the jacket as she arrived back in Washington – perhaps just in case we didn’t get the message the first time.
