Naturally, we were going to give you Aretha as part of our celebration of International Women’s Month in March. Not only was Franklin dubbed “The Queen of Soul,” she is considered by many the greatest female singer of all time, and a feminist trailblazer to boot, as demonstrated with anthemic songs like “Respect.”
It may be a coincidence – or perhaps not – that the third installment of the brilliant National Geographic show “Genius,” featuring Franklin, got under way this week, as Women’s Months now comes to a close. (Do check it out, and previous editions fictionalizing the lives of Einstein and Picasso).
Produced in part by Ron Howard, the scripted anthology episode series follows Franklin’s life, beginning with her emergence as a vocal and piano prodigy in the gospel choir of her father’s church, leading to her first recorded album at the age of 14. Presumably, the series will continue (it is still airing) until her death on Aug. 16, 2018, at age 76.
This video captures a truly remarkable snapshot of the legend, performing her 1967 hit “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” for US president Obama and wife Michelle at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015, just a year before her death.
Co-written by Carole King (that’s her losing her mind in the audience), the song only reached No. 8 for Franklin upon release, but soared to No. 1 in the UK after she died.
Here’s appreciating “Sister Re.”
