LISTENING IN: New musical takes audiences on a ‘Joyride’ with Roxette

Furthering the ‘90s musical revival, Malmö Opera in Sweden is hosting ‘Joyride the Musical,’ a new feel-good production paying tribute to the music of Swedish pop band Roxette. The musical takes audiences on a joyful, humorous journey that since its debut Sept. 6 has received rave reviews from audiences, comprised in large part by international visitors.

Comprised of duo Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, Roxette has sold over 80 million albums worldwide, with hits like ‘Listen To Your Heart,’ ‘It Must Have Been Love,’ ‘The Look,’ and, of course, the musical’s namesake, ‘Joyride.’ The tracks form the core of the musical production, inspired by British author Jane Fallon’s relationship comedy ‘Got You Back.’

With stellar vocalists, dancers, colourful set designs, and impressive video projections, British director Guy Unsworth and set designer David Woodhead have created a world inspired by Roxette’s popular music videos and the fashion of the 1990s.

For those who remember the band’s rise to fame, the musical offers a nostalgic journey packed with familiar references. For new fans, ‘Joyride’ is a perfect introduction to the Roxette’s upbeat pop repertoire.

‘Joyride the Musical’ runs until April 27, 2025. Performances are in Swedish with English subtitles, while the songs are in their original English.

Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city on the southwest coast, and has become a significant destination for musical events in recent years, drawing music lovers worldwide with its vibrant cultural scene.
