LISTENING IN: Love reigns o’er Debo Ray

Sometimes all there is to say is “wow.” It’s hard to match powerhouse vocalist Roger Daltrey, but Debo Ray makes it a conversation on this rendition of The Who classic “Love Reign O’er Me” in a performance from just last September.

Known for her work on the Grammy-nominated jazz album “Waiting Game,” to her solo work, which incorporates jazz, rock, hip hop and funk styles, the 33-year-old Bostonian (real name Deborah Pierre) wasn’t even born yet when The Who introduced the song on their 1973 album “Quadrophenia.”

For all her influences, Ray stays faithful to the original version of the song, relying on her incredible voice as justification for covering it. The dreamy, jazzy piano intro may be a little long for some, so know that the singer enters around the three-minute mark. And then, did I say wow?

Lyrics

Only love
Can make it rain
The way the beach is kissed by the sea
Only love
Can make it rain
Like the sweat of lovers’
Laying in the fields
Love, reign o’er me
Love, reign o’er me, rain on me, rain on me

Only love
Can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky
Only love
Can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high

Love, reign o’er me, rain on me, rain on me
Love, reign o’er me, rain on me, rain on me

On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool, cool rain
I can’t sleep and I lay and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
Oh God, I need a drink of cool, cool rain

Love, reign o’er me, rain on me, on me, on me, oh
Love, reign o’er me, whoa, on me

Love
