Like Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” Queen’s “I Want to Break Free” has become over the years another anthem of defiance and the fight against oppression.
And while “oppression” may not be precisely the right word to describe the state of the world today under the global pandemic, the sentiment certainly applies to the many millions (billions?) of people around the globe who are quarantined and self-isolating and longing to break free from (albeit necessary) social and economic restrictions and return to their regular lives.
Released on the 1984 album “The Works,” the original video was a campy send-up of the British soap opera “Coronation Street” – a cross-dressing spoof that was a hit in the UK and Europe but bombed in the US, where it was misunderstood to be a statement of Freddie Mercury’s sexuality.
We offer a live version here from Wembley Stadium in London.
