28 MAR 2017: Disney CEO Bob Iger has had his contract extended for the third, and he says – last – time. Iger took the reins at Disney in 2005 and since then Disney’s share price has surged more than 200 percent. His contract has now been extended through July 2, 2019.
“We could use more time to not only spend on succession but to create a better transition,” Iger said during a tech and entertainment conference.
Orin Smith, independent lead director of the Disney board, said the company is ‘will be best served by (Iger’s) continued leadership as the board conducts the robust process of identifying a successor and ensuring a smooth transition.’
There have been a number of potential and rumoured successors for CEO who have come and gone over the past few years.
COO Tom Staggs was the most recent favourite to replace Iger. He left Disney last year after the board of directors failed to give him an assurance that he would succeed Iger as chairman-CEO in 2018.
