Florida’s reluctance to insist people get a shot in the arm may prove to be a shot in the gut for the state with a major cruise line claiming that it may have to skip ports in Florida if it can’t require that its passengers be vaccinated.
Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line says Gov. Ron DeSantis’ order that bans businesses from requiring that customers be vaccinated against COVID-19 conflicts with guidelines from federal health authorities that would only let cruise ships sail in US waters if passengers and crew members are vaccinated.
Ironically, DeSantis has been an active proponent for the re-opening of the cruise industry, which is a major contributor to the state’s economy, even going so far as suing the US federal government over its no sail order.
But Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO Frank Del Rio says lawyers think federal law tops state law and that if Norwegian can’t operate in Florida it will consider going to other states or the Caribbean.
Cruise lines have been barred from sailing in US waters or stopping at US ports since March 2020. Some are slowly resuming trips in other countries and requiring all passengers on those cruises be vaccinated.
The companies are pushing the CDC to let them return the US this summer, although none of the major companies — Norwegian, Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corp. — have announced any US cruises yet.
