Unite, the trade union for British Airways cabin crew has the warned the airline that strike action could happen quickly over the company’s controversial ‘fire and rehire’ policy. The union claims the airline plans to lay off up to 12,000 workers and rehire some on downgraded terms and conditions.

Len McCluskey, general secretary of trade union Unite said it will move forward with plans for industrial action ‘with immediate effect.’

In a hard-hitting letter to chief executive Alex Cruz, McCluskey reportedly said, “Your decision to adopt a scorched earth strategy with a fire and rehire approach was always despicable. You and your management team have dragged the good name of British Airways through the mud.”

“Have you ever asked yourself why so many MPs from all parties, at the highest level, have condemned British Airways or why newspaper and media outlets have been appalled at your actions?”

BA said it is still committed to talk, but maintains difficult decisions have to be taken.

“We are not immune to this crisis. We have to adapt to survive, so we will continue with the proper, lawful consultative process and we will keep inviting union representatives to discuss our proposals to the serious challenges we face.”

BA who says it operated 85% fewer flights during the first two weeks of July compared to last year, has already reached a compromise deal with pilots union Balpa for pay cuts and some job losses to avoid widespread redundancies.
