Drinks can be pricey at tourist spots in Rome, but two American tourists certainly had no idea just how expensive when they decided earlier this week that the Colosseum was the ideal spot for an early morning – or perhaps end of the evening – beer or two .
The BBC reported that the pair, both in their 20s, were nabbed sitting on the second of the ancient gladiator stadium at about 05:30 am local time.
However, entry to the almost 2,000-year-old landmark is prohibited overnight and the police were not amused. The pair, who were not named by police, were fined of €800 ($1,143) after they admitted illegally entering the Colosseum.
That’s a pretty expensive round.
The Colosseum was built as the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire, famous for hosting gladiatorial fights and other public spectacles in front of crowds of tens of thousands.
It remains one of Italy’s most visited landmarks, attracting about 7.6 million visitors in 2019.
