DELIGHTFUL DESPACITO: Classy strings version gives song new life

Of the many places one discovers new music – radio, TV, the Internet, friends – the last place I expected to be blown away by a song was at the breakfast buffet at a Sandals resort in the Bahamas.

The tune seemed vaguely familiar as I loaded up on pancakes and bacon, eventually revealing itself as “Despacito,” the ubiquitous and impossibly catchy Latin-infused song by Puerto Rican artist Fonsi, which, when re-recorded with Justin Bieber in 2017 became the biggest Spanish hit since the similarly styled Macarena in 1996 and went on to break YouTube with over a three billion views, at the same time becoming a worldwide No. 1 hit.

Hard to believe it took me a few minutes to recognize it, but then the pop version had put me off entirely, though I loved the priceless parody by Randy Rainbow, “Desperate Cheeto,” about a certain someone currently inhabiting the White House.

Which brings us to this enthralling version, performed by a string quartet, which gives the song new life and a provides a tasteful, classic account of a surprisingly beautiful song that hopefully will be remembered long after the Biebs and the Donald are long forgotten.

Check it out and enjoy.
