CUT CRYSTAL: Serenity refused entry to Aruba

The Crystal Serenity was due to end its voyage in Aruba but was denied entry, despite, according to the Cruise Line, paying upfront for all docking services. Instead the ship will head for the Bahamas, as its sister ship the Crystal Symphony did just over a week ago.

The Symphony had to change course from Miami when a US judge granted an order to seize the vessel on a lawsuit over unpaid fuel bills.

“Since receiving this most unfortunate news, we have spent hours conferring with Aruba officials toward a positive resolution – with even our humanitarian pleas falling on deaf ears – but to no avail,” Crystal Cruises told passengers in a message.

“Although Crystal Serenity was cleared to arrive in Aruba with all services paid for in advance and even though there are no reasonable risks or claims made against the vessel, local officials informed us that the ship will not be permitted to dock as scheduled.”

Crystal Serenity was just weeks into a world cruise when it was forced to curtail it when its parent company Genting Hong Kong filed for liquidation earlier last month.

Crystal Serenity will instead dock in Bimini, where most passengers will disembark and, like Symphony passengers a week earlier, will be taken by Balearia fast ferry to Port Everglades.

Crystal said in a statement that the passengers will then be taken to an area hotel where overnight accommodations will be provided by the company and that it will reimburse applicable airline change fees.

“All of our attention is now focused on taking care of our guests and returning them home or to their next destination. There are simply no words to express our deep regret and disappointment.”
