COLLISION COURSE: Cruise ship has a run-in with a dock

The Harmony of the Seas hit a concrete extension as it attempted to dock in Falmouth, Jamaica last week. Footage shows the enormous ship which is the longest cruise liner in the world, hitting the extension. Guests on the ship can be heard screaming as the concrete mooring pylon scraped along the liner’s side, and then collapsed into the water.(Video)

The collision caused mostly cosmetic damage to the Oasis class vessel, including dents and paint scrapes, reported the Royal Caribbean Blog. The minor repairs were completed within hours.

“There were no injuries to guests or crew and only minor cosmetic damage to the ship’s stern. The sailing will continue as scheduled,” said Royal Caribbean in a statement.

The accident happened last Thursday, May 26, at around 7am while the ship was backing into its assigned spot at the dock. The Ministry of Tourism in Jamaica said that pilot error was responsible. The Falmouth stop was part of a seven-day cruise from Port Canaveral in Florida.

The dock is currently being repaired and should be fully operational for ships next week.

The Port of Falmouth, which is 18 miles east of Montego Bay, has several vessels scheduled to arrive in the next few days, including Royal Caribbean International’s Liberty of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas, as well as Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy.

Harmony of the Seas is not scheduled to return to Falmouth until June 23.
