CARIBBEAN CATCHING UP ON ARRIVALS

Seven major Caribbean destinations have published their stopover arrival numbers for the first half of the year with five of them showing strong signs of recovery compared with the same five months of 2019.

Leading the way, the Dominican Republic saw its 2022 year to date stopover arrival numbers through May reach 97.1% of the total for the same five months of 2019 (i.e., pre-pandemic), while Curacao saw its stopover numbers reach 93.2%, Aruba 89.5%, and Antigua and Barbuda 78.9%.

Barbados saw its stopover count reach 56.2% of its 2019 total with Trinidad and Tobago reaching 42.1% while Cuba lagged behind posting numbers showing it had reached just 24.7% of its 2019 total for the same five months.

Many other destinations have published numbers through the end of the first three months of 2022 and showed a recovery rate of about 50% compared to the same three months of 2019 although Jamaica at 72.1% and Saint Lucia 70.6% did better than the general average.

Similarly, five leading cruise destinations – The Bahamas, The USVI, Aruba, Curacao, and Barbados – reporting through the end of May 2022 showing that the number of cruise visitors they have received reached 65.1% of the number received in the same five months of 2019. In total 17 cruise destinations have reported their 2022 numbers with the overall average reaching 51% of the 2019 cruise visitor total for the same time period.
