CANADA SAFE FOR WOMEN’S SOLO TRAVEL

Canada ranks as the 8th safest country for women to solo travel, according to new study that analyzed over 30 countries around the world on factors such as attitudes toward violence against women, as well as wider gender equality indicators.

Conducted by luggage storage firm Bounce, which has locations in over a thousand cities, the survey ranked Ireland first for women’s travel safety, followed by Austria, Norway, Slovenia, and Switzerland, with the top 10 rounded out by Spain, Portugal, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan/Poland (tie).

Canada scored 6.67 on the overall safety scaled compared to 7.88 for leader Ireland.

In individual categories, Canada notably registered the fewest responses of “women who have experienced violence” (overall, not specific to travel) with 1.9% – 20 times better than Columbia – the worse country on the list of 34.

“The number of women who have suffered violence from a partner is a good indicator of the attitudes toward violence against women in a country, and the nation with the lowest rate is Canada,” stated the survey.

In another important survey category, 71% of respondents said they feel safe walking at home at night in Canada compared to 83% in Norway.

In first place in the survey, the Republic of Ireland scored particularly highly for the laws it has in place to protect women from violence, as well as when it comes to local attitudes toward violence against women.

Other notables: France was 14th, the UK 26th, Mexico 28th, and the US 32nd.
