BACK TO WORK: Traffic controllers end one day walkout in Jamaica

Full travel services are restored at Jamaica’s two major airports as air traffic controllers ended their strike action Thursday evening. The country’s air traffic services were disrupted yesterday as traffic controllers walked out. Authorities said the issues were as a result of supply chain disruptions and administrative issues. Travel to and from the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay was affected. Word came last evening that the traffic controllers are returning to work.

Several flights, including Sunwing from Toronto and JetBlue out of New York, were able to land before the workers walked out on Thursday. Other airlines were turned back, including an Air Canada flight, which was en route to the island, was forced to return to Toronto.

Jamaica worked quickly to resolve the situation and the decision to return to work followed a meeting with the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) and the Jamaica Air Traffic Controllers Association (JTCA). Authorities said the workers’ complaints are being addressed and interim procedures will now provide additional support enabling controllers to provide air traffic services.
