American Airlines has put down a nonrefundable deposit with manufacturer Boom Supersonic, to purchase up to 20 supersonic jets, and hopes to debut the aircraft in 2029. The planes are listed at $200 million.
Boom says its Overture planes would be able to fly New York to London in three and a half hours, and London to Miami in less than five hours.
“There are tens of millions of passengers every year flying in business class on routes where Overture will give a big speed-up,” said Boom CEO Blake Scholl.
“Airlines will be able to do it profitably.”
“Passengers want flights that are faster, more convenient, more sustainable and that’s what Overture delivers.”
Boom estimates New York to London tickets would costs about us $4,000 to $5,000.
United Airlines also announced an order for 15 Boom Overture planes last year.
Boom says the Overture program will cost up to $6 billion to $8 billion to develop.
Overture jets will fly at Mach 1.7, with speeds of 1,300 mph and carry about 80 passengers.
“Supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers,” American’s CFO Derek Kerr said.
