Hawaii’s Governor David Ige, has announced new rules for Canadians travelling to Hawaii this winter. Noting that Canada represents the second-largest international market for the islands, Ige says Canadians travelling on Air Canada and WestJet will be allowed to avoid quarantine so long as they show proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

“Canada and Hawaii share a close bond, and we have been overwhelmed with the calls and emails from our Canadian friends asking when they can safely come back to Hawaii,” said the Governor, who joked that Hawaii was Canada’s “11th Province.”

Under the adapted rules, passengers can avoid quarantine so long as they show proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure.

Tests musts be booked with an approved lab or pharmacy.

The new testing program is being implemented in partnership with both Air Canada and WestJet. On its website WestJet says the fee-based tests will be done by DynaLIFE laboratories.

The tests will cost $150 and are only available in Alberta, but are open to all Canadians. The DynaLIFE tests are administered at participating pharmacies, according to the airline.

“Programs like this that provide viable, effective, and alternative options to general quarantine requirements are an important step in safely reopening travel around the world,” said Air Canada in a statement.

The airline would have more information in the coming days on how and where Canadians across the country could get a health certificate and the process.

Officials said it’s too early to estimate how many Canadians might take advantage of the new initiative.
