A LAUNCH LIKE NO OTHER: Royal Caribbean’s pandemic-inspired Odyssey

A trio of firsts will mark the launch of Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas in May: the inaugural sailing of the cruise line’s much-anticipated Quantum class vessel, its first-ever cruises from Israel, and the first fully vaccinated cruises that include both passengers and crew.

Israelis will be the first to experience the new ship when Royal Caribbean International begins sailing from the country for first time, offering a combination of three- to seven-night itineraries visiting the Greek Isles and Cyprus. Departures will be round-trip from Haifa.

Originally scheduled to sale out of Rome for its summer season, the Odyssey’s new departure point reflects Israel’s status as the world’s leading vaccination nation for COVID-19 and also a new reciprocal tourism agreement between the country and its Mediterranean neighbour, Greece.

“Thanks to the millions of vaccines we have brought, I am proud that Israel will be the first country in the world to launch Royal Caribbean’s new flagship,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who added, “Royal Caribbean’s decision to come to Israel is a significant expression of confidence in our policy. This is an important economic, touristic moment for the State of Israel.”

In conjunction with Israel’s health and tourism authorities, Royal Caribbean will be the first cruise line to offer fully vaccinated sailings, where both crew and guests above the age of 16 will be vaccinated against COVID-19. Details on the additional health and safety measures to be implemented by Israel and Royal Caribbean will be announced at a later date, says the cruise line.

Odyssey of the Seas

Dubbed a “Green Island at sea,” the innovative 4,819-passenger Odyssey of the Seas promises a variety of new experiences from bow to stern, including:

• Next-generation SeaPlex indoor-outdoor activity complex, including sports bar
• A variety of dining options, such as the first Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar
• Two-level pool deck with kids Aqua Park

After the summer in Israel, Odyssey is scheduled to cross the Atlantic to begin its inaugural North American season in November, offering six- to eight-night itineraries from Fort Lauderdale and visiting destinations such as Curacao and Aruba.
