26 JUN 2018: A young woman is being credited with coming to the aid of a deaf man during a flight from Boston to Portland, Oregon. Clara Daly, of Calabasas, California, and her mother were travelling last week when the flight attendants asked if anyone knew American Sign Language and when she responded, asked her if she could finger spell. “And I was like, “Yeah, I totally know how to finger spell” said the teenager.
The 15-year-old who is dyslexic and has been taking sign language classes for a year and volunteered to help. That’s when she met 64-year-old Tim Cook, who was travelling alone and struggling to communicate.
The flight crew wanted to ensure Cook was comfortable and well looked after, but they struggled to communicate with him.
“They thought that he might need something and they weren’t sure how to communicate,” Clara said.
Clara said Cook first told her he would like a water and asked how much time was left in the flight.
She then returned to her seat, before an attendant came back and said Cook had asked for her again.
“He didn’t need anything. He was just lonely and wanted to talk,’”Clara said.
So they chatted for the last hour of the flight. “We just were talking, having a conversation about life.” said Clara.
“I was thinking, “Wow, this is so cool, I hope I don’t spell anything wrong.”
Clara said she has found it funny that her story is getting so much attention.
“Doing something like that is just what anyone would have done,” she said.
A fellow passenger captured a photo of Clara signing into Cook’s hand and posted it to Facebook Sunday. The post has since received more than 1 million likes.
Cook told KGW-TV he was “very moved” that Clara came and helped him. Clara says their chance encounter was “meant to be.”
