The song was written by Paul Simon, but it belonged to Art Garfunkel, whose angelic voice helped make “Bridge Over Troubled Water” his signature song and a timeless classic that is as revered today as it was when it was released 50 years ago in 1970.
The song was the last No. 1 hit for folk superstar duo Simon and Garfunkel, who split after its release, but they continued to perform it live during occasional reunions, including the one presented here at a benefit concert in New York’s Central Park in 1981.
There are other versions to be found on YouTube, some with better acoustics and more lavish surroundings; and the recorded version included Simon on the final verse. But this one is all Art – in his prime of voice. Because no one ever sang it better.
Lyrics
When you’re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all
I’m on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you’re down and out
When you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I’ll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
