George was always my favourite Beatle, perhaps because he was coming into his own as a songwriter as I was coming of age, as well as being a bit of an underdog amongst the Fab Four (at least to me). “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” still gives me chills and I always felt “I Me Mine” was the most under-rated Beatles’ song. However, when it comes to the Quiet Beatle, even after all these years, it’s “What is Life” that sticks for me the most.
Released 50 years ago in early 1971 off the 1970 album “All Things Must Pass,” (Harrison’s first solo effort since the break-up of the band), the song was only a B side to “My Sweet Lord” in the UK, but a single elsewhere, including Canada where it reached No. 3 on the charts.
In contrast to the contemplative ‘Lord,’ “What is Life” unleashed an unexpected, joyous wall of sound feel (no doubt encouraged by co-producer Phil Spector) punctuated by a distinctive opening signature guitar riff and effervescent horn section, and with no less than Eric Clapton helping out on guitar. The end product is considered one of Harrison’s catchiest and most beloved songs.
On the chance that you haven’t listened to the song in 50 years (impossible! – it’s a classic rock staple and has been a soundtrack in countless movie soundtracks), do so accompanied by this amazing video – a fitting masterpiece of animation in its own right, capturing George’s life and career in colourful and clever detail. Then carry on and check out the web site or YouTube channel of Spanish artist and illustrator Alvar Ortego for equally incredible depictions of other Beatles songs, plus ‘60s contemporaries like The Stones and Kinks.
Lyrics
What I feel, I can’t say
But my love is there for you anytime of day
But if it’s not love that you need
Then I’ll try my best to make everything succeed
Tell me, what is my life without your love, oh
Tell me, who am I without you, ooh, by my side
What I know, I can do
If I give my love now to everyone like you
But if it’s not love that you need
Then I’ll try my best to make everything succeed
Tell me, what is my life without your love
Tell me, who am I without you, ooh, by my side
Tell me, what is my life without your love, oh
Tell me, who am I without you, ooh, by my side
What I feel, I can’t say
But my love is there for you any time of day
But if it’s not love that you need
Then I’ll try my best to make everything succeed
Tell me, what is my life without your love, oh
Tell me, who am I without you, ooh, by my side
Oh, tell me, what is my life without your love, oh
Tell me, who am I without you, ooh, by my side
What is my life without your love, oh
Tell me, who am I without you, ooh, by my side
Oh, tell me, what is my life without your love, oh
Tell me who am I without you
