Ontario reported 1,699 new cases of COVID-19 on March 22 (yesterday) with Health Minster Christine Elliott saying there were 500 new cases found in Toronto, as well as 318 in Peel, 155 in York Region and 114 in Hamilton. The seven-day average now stands at 1,600. As of Saturday, Ontario adjusted dining capacity limits at restaurants and bars in several regions. Outdoor dining with physical distancing is allowed in areas in the grey or lockdown zones, including Toronto and Peel.
Back in business
Food and drink establishments in the province’s second-strictest red category can increase capacity to 50 people indoors, up from the previous limit of 10, while restaurants in orange zones can now have 100 people indoors, twice the previous cap of 50.
“It gets restaurants back in the business of directly serving people,” James Rilett, vice-president of Central Canada for Restaurants Canada, said in an interview on Monday.
“It gives them a light at the end of the tunnel and a chance to make it through this.”
Yet he said the impact on restaurants in the Toronto-area, where indoor dining continues to be prohibited, will largely depend on the spring weather.
The Duke of York pub in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood saw lineups with wait times of up to an hour on both Saturday and Sunday, said Cindy Simpson, executive vice-president of Imago Restaurants.
“The weather could not have been better, it was about 15 degrees and sunny each day,” she said. “I stood outside all weekend, talking to our guests and thanking them for coming, we were so happy to see them and it felt fantastic.”
Still, food service operators will also likely continue to rely on government support, Simpson said, referring to funding that has helped subsidize wages and rents for restaurants.
“We have two large patios so there are a good number of seats but we’ll have to figure out in the next couple of weeks if it’s enough for us to break even or even make a little bit of money,” she said. “But we probably wouldn’t be able to open without government support.”
The Covid numbers…
There were 813 people in hospital on Monday, up from 765 the day before — and that’s with the caveat of that figure being typically underreported on weekends.
There are also 298 people in intensive care, and 186 of those are on a ventilator, the province says. That’s down slightly from 302 and 189 the day before, respectively.
Dr. David Williams, the province’s chief medical officer of health, said the number of new cases daily, the test positivity rate and the percentage of new cases that are variants are on the increase.
“We’re in the third wave. The numbers are slowly going up,” Williams said. “We’re not doubling, but we’re going up, particularly with our variants of concern.”
