With some Canadian quarantine refuseniks choosing to accept $800 fines for forgoing mandatory hotel isolation – or even skipping it altogether – a British couple has been fined £20,000 (about $35,000) by UK authorities for failing to quarantine after returning home from a trip to Dubai.
The Liverpool Echo reports that the Birkenhead couple were busted by police after blatantly breaching Britain’s COVID-19 quarantine protocols, which includes staying in a government-approved quarantine hotel for 10 days for a foreign travel red list country like Dubai.
After being reported, and an ensuing investigation, the couple were nabbed by police, deposited in a quarantine hotel, and fined £10,000 each.
Noting that the couple purposely avoided a direct flight from Dubai to a designated UK airport, police Chief Inspector Chris Barnes, according to the Echo, commented, “Strict rules around international travel have been put in place by the government for a reason, and to disregard them in this way is selfish, inconsiderate, and potentially dangerous.”
