Alas, as much as we wish it weren’t true, we can’t get to every pub, patio or bar in the world for a review (strictly professional, of course!), so we’ll leave it the good folks at the World’s 50 Best Bars to recommend a few from their annual list.
Announced on Nov. 5, the list is based on extensive consultations with industry figures and includes the following highlights:
World’s Best Bar: Connaught Bar, London
2. Dante, New York
3. The Clumsies, Athens
4. Atlas lands, Singapore
5. Tayer + Elementary, London
As for the Connaught, located at Carlos Place in Mayfair, W5BB has the following to say:
“It’s hard to think of a bar anywhere in the world that has made excellence so effortlessly routine as Connaught Bar. This Mayfair hotel bar’s trick is it isn’t trend-chasing and flash; it evolves from one year to the next, always delivering with poise and studied purpose.
The gleaming cubist interior frames the bar like a piece of fine art, the service is pitched perfectly – warm and judiciously attentive – and whatever your penchant, the cocktails, like the staff, are impeccably tailored. Like a benevolent omen, the trolley gently clinks and glides around the room delivering bespoke Dry Martinis – probably the best in London.
Everything here just makes sense: take the latest menu, Formae, inspired by the shapes and form of The Connaught’s David Collins-designed décor. Try the Magnetum, a scotch and sherry mix which comes in two distinct parts, the two blended by a pull on a custom-designed, modernist stirrer.
It’s been knocking on the door for a number of years, but 2020 sees Connaught Bar a vindicated winner of The World’s Best Bar.”
While we’re sad to report that no Canadian bars made the top-50 list, complete rankings can be found HERE.
