David TaitThe quintessential “airline guy,” as executive VP of Virgin Atlantic, David Tait set up, and then ran, the company’s hugely successful US operation for many years. He also has had stints at Wardair, Laker, Air Florida (pre-Virgin) and Air Canada (post). GET OFFBad news day
09 SEP 2010: There is a (very) old story about an elderly Scotsman travelling by train from London to Glasgow. As the story goes, he shunned the express and instead took a local train that made a dozen or more stops along the route.
EARLy FALLBlowing in the wind
02 SEP 2010: I've been looking forward to this last week of the summer all year. A final chance to unwind before the kids go back to school and our three goalie sons' travel hockey season takes over our lives for the next seven long months.
MINOR PROBLEMSLet’s get real
26 AUG 2010: Yorkshire England has some wonderful old folksy sayings the most popular of which is probably, “there’s nowt so queer as folk,” which translates to, “there’s nothing so strange as people.” This was certainly the expression that sprang to mind when I read the story attached to this week’s headline, “BA changes child seating policy following court case.”
BETTER AND BETTERLuxury transcends stardom
19 AUG 2010: There are a lot of words in the English language that are horribly over-utilized and many are not fit to print here, but that’s not the kind I am talking about. I’m thinking of words like, “like” “scenario”, “designer”, “unique” and “absolutely”.
WORKING CLASS HEROESThe bus driver before the flight attendant
12 AUG 2010: Budweiser in-hand, Steven Slater, the (soon-to-be former) jetBlue flight attendant, certainly knows how to stage a dramatic exit! So much so that, at last count, yesterday’s report on these pages had drawn no fewer than a dozen responses, surely a record.
SPEAK UPAnyone for “Roasted Italian”
05 AUG 2010: Anyone who has read these columns for a while may have realized that I have a bit of a “thing” for language. I must also confess to being greatly concerned about the future of the English language, particularly when I hear my twelve year-old son say things like, “Dad, nobody speaks to each other on the ‘phone any more. It’s so un-cool - we just text or tweet.”
FAMILY MATTERSKids and road warriors don’t mix
29 JUL 2010: Anyone who has played only singles tennis for an extended period of time and then suddenly found themselves on a doubles team will understand the problem that faces thousands of die-hard road warriors every summer.
SPATIAL ISSUESThe kneed to vent
22 JUL 2010: Last week’s story of a female passenger on Southwest losing it with the three year-old who was constantly kicking the back of her seat, must have resonated with the majority of readers.
TAIT IS TRAVELLINGHe’ll be back
14 JUL 2010: David is swanning about the UK, he promises to be back next week.
WHEREFORE ART THOUAn airport by any other name
06 JUL 2010: Juliet could well have uttered these same words if awaiting Romeo’s arrival on some of today’s low cost European carriers. I just went through a fascinating exercise trying to tack a short hop to Stockholm, Sweden onto the back of an upcoming London business trip. A quick check of BA’s fare from Heathrow revealed a roundtrip fare of around $300. Not bad, but having become an admirer of Ryanair, I thought I’d check out what they had on offer.
