For scuba divers, Greater Fort Lauderdale is the place to be. The ocean temperature ranges from 22° C in the winter to 26° C in the summer – just perfect for exploring the area’s 76 artificial reefs and the largest collection of warm-water wrecks in the Western world.
And, who needs a boat? Greater Fort Lauderdale is the only place in the continental USA where your clients can snorkel and dive on a living coral reef straight off the beach. In Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and Hollywood, there’s an amazing variety of fish and underwater life just a hundred yards from the shore.
There are plenty of possibilities for divers: scuba dive, free dive or snorkel? Explore the reefs and wrecks from the beach or dive off the side of a boat? Night diving offers a whole new experience and of course, one can photograph and video their amazing underwater experience.
What a wreck!
Some of Greater Fort Lauderdale’s best-known wrecks include The SS Copenhagen, which ran aground in just 25 feet of water back in 1900. It’s now a state underwater museum and is popular with both scuba divers and snorkellers.
Then there’s the 175-foot Captain Dan – a former U.S. Coast Guard tender. The top of the wheelhouse is 70 feet below the surface, and the deck is at 90 feet. Its artificial reef is home to barracuda, huge grouper, amberjack, parrotfish and swarms of small fish. With large access holes for easy access, the Captain Dan is a treat for certified wreck divers.
The “Wreck Trek” dive site offers three wrecks in one dive: When the currents cooperate and if you manage your air, you can drift-dive from Jay Scutti to Tracy to Mercy Jesus – all on one tank.
Just a mile from the Pompano Beach fishing pier, Shipwreck Park offers underwater art exhibits and is a major contributor to Florida’s artificial reef system. It is easily the most accessible major dive site in the U.S. and is a major attraction for divers.
Explore the Rapa Nui Reef
The Rapa Nui Reef in Deerfield Beach is a relatively new addition that combines a man-made reef with underwater sculpture and marine life. Rapa Nui is Polynesian for “Easter Island” and is a tribute to the iconic stone statues of the island.
