Starting Nov. 27, Canadians can apply in advance for the United Kingdom’s new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) form, which will be required by all Canadians entering the UK effective Jan. 8, 2025. Here is everything you need to know.
Why: The government is taking major steps towards digitizing the UK border and immigration system. ETAs are digitally linked to a traveller’s passport and ensure more robust security checks are carried out before people begin their journey to the UK.
Who: All visitors – including babies and children – who do not need a visa will require an ETA to travel to the UK. British and Irish passport holders are exempt. Travellers connecting onward through the UK need an ETA.
When: Canadians will require one to enter the UK as of Jan. 8, 2025. Other nationalities may have earlier or later deadlines, but by April 25, 2025, all travellers must have one when entering the country.
How much: £10 p.p.
What does it allow: Unlimited entry to the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study, and transit through the UK.
How long does it take to get one: ETA’s are required in advance of arrival. Processing will take up to three working days though may come quicker.
How long does it last: The ETA will be linked to the traveller’s passport and will last for two years or until the traveller’s passport expires – whichever comes first.
How to apply: Anyone needing to apply for an ETA will be able to do so through a quick and simple process using the UK ETA app (available through the App Stop and Google Play). Or apply online HERE.

The government says the introduction of ETAs is in line with the approach many other countries have taken to border security, including the US and Australia.
“Digitization enables a smooth experience for the millions of people who pass through the border every year,” says Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra. “The worldwide expansion of the ETA demonstrates our commitment to enhance security through new technology and embedding a modern immigration system.”
