PUBS & PATIOS:Pony Corral a winner in Winnipeg

Winnipeg’s reputation for woeful winters is not unfounded, so it’s practically a requirement to embrace the warm weather when one can. And the Pony Corral Pier 7 has been helping city residents and visitors alike do that since 1988.

One of three restaurants in the chain, the Pier 7 location on Pembina Highway is particularly notable for its great Polynesian-themed patio overlooking the Red River.

The lively establishment is also a sports and entertainment hot spot, hosts events like the Winnipeg Car show, and offers live and DJ music. Famous faces to have dropped by over the years include local legends Burton Cummings and Chantal Kreviazuk.

A happy hour menu features quick bites and brews, but this spot also serves up classic favourites like pancakes, omelettes and French toast for breakfast, and a wide range of pastas, steaks, an sandwiches for lunch and dinner.

Thanks to its Greek owner, the menu also has a not unsubstantial selection of “Greek-style” dishes, from ribs to souvlaki and gyros.

Greek wines also highlight an international collection, and there’s even a “Greek Caesar” on the extensive cocktail and drinks list, which includes martinis, both hot and frozen drinks, smoothies, and shooters. Your basic near-pints of Bud or Kokanee ring up at six bucks.

Pony Corral Pier 7 is located at 1700 Pembina Hwy. in south Winnipeg, about 20 minutes from downtown. Opening hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. till 2 on weekends.
