HIGHLY COMPLEMENTARY: Air Transat, Porter launch ‘transformative’ alliance

Citing “highly complementary” route networks, Air Transat and Porter Airlines are creating a joint venture “alliance” that the companies say will transform the current Canadian aviation competitive landscape. To be implemented gradually in 2024, the arrangement will extend the airlines’ existing code-sharing agreement to give travellers access to a broader network through enhanced commercial collaboration and optimization.

Amid what the company characterizes as “cordial and respectable” bargaining, Transat says it is confident that agreement will be made with its flight attendants, who have voted to strike as early as Jan. 3, 2024. The union representing 2,100 flight attendants at Air Transat says workers voted to approve a strike if they cannot reach a new contract with the airline.

AIRFARES PLUMMET AS CAPACITY CATCHES UP

Statistics Canada says airfares have plummeted over the past year, as airlines shore up capacity, even while consumers think twice about travelling in a world of higher costs. In its consumer price index (CPI) Tuesday, the agency said the price of air transportation dropped 19.4 percent last month compared with October 2022.

A parliamentary committee is launching an investigation into accessibility at Canadian airlines, with a focus on the country’s two largest carriers. SADDLE UP: Horse hijinks disrupt flight over Atlantic

A cargo jet headed to Belgium from New York had to turn around mid-flight last week after a horse escaped its stall and got loose in the hold, according to air traffic control audio. The Boeing 747 operated by Air Atlanta Icelandic had just started its flight across the Atlantic Ocean when the pilot radioed air traffic control in Boston and said that a horse on board had escaped its stall.

WINTER IS COMING: And Sunwing says it’s ready

Sunwing is reporting strong results early in its winter season (starting Nov. 1), in part reflecting key measures designed to “bolster operational readiness” for the peak season to come. The airline says it has already carried nearly 100,000 customers on 600 flights to destinations throughout the tropics – and all of them “successfully completed.”

An investigation is underway into what Canada’s transport minister and the RCMP call “threats” against Air India, after an online video warns people not to fly on the airline on Sunday, Nov. 19. Pablo Rodriguez says Canada and its security partners are investigating “recent threats circulating online,” referring to comments about Air India.

WINDOW PAIN: Close call as damaged plane returns to London

A charter flight flying from London to Orlando was forced to land after the crew realized it had reached 14,000 feet with two window panes missing. The Titan Airways plane, which was previously used by King Charles and UK prime minister Rishi Sunak, took off from London’s Stansted Airport on October 4 before the crew realized the windows had been damaged during a film shoot the previous day.

ALONE AND AWAY: Mother at a loss to locate unaccompanied minors

Amber Vencill, a Florida mother, alleges her 12 and 10-year-old sons who were travelling alone, were left without food, water, blankets or pillows after their flight was cancelled. She also claims she was given conflicting information on the boys’ rescheduled flight and was unable to speak with them for hours.

TOO MANY CLOSE CALLS: FAA widens investigation

This August, US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it was holding meetings at 90 airports after the National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating seven runway incursion events since January, including some that were potentially catastrophic. The FAA announced yesterday that runway 16 additional airports have been added to the list and will be investigated in the coming weeks after a series of troubling close-call aviation incidents.
