WESTJET STRIKE AVERTED: Government imposes arbitration on airline, mechanics

A possible long-weekend strike at WestJet has been averted. The federal government on Thursday directed the airline and plane mechanics into binding arbitration to resolve their dispute, steering clear of a work stoppage that could otherwise have disrupted flights for hundreds of thousands of travellers over the Canada Day long weekend.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING: Boeing sanctioned for sharing information about 737 Max 9 investigation

Boeing is being sanctioned by U.S. investigators for sharing information about a federal investigation of a door plug blowout that left a gaping hole in a Boeing 737 Max 9. The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday that Boeing “blatantly violated” the agency’s investigative regulations as well as a signed agreement by providing non-public investigative information to the media and speculating about possible causes of the Jan. 5 door plug blowout on a Boeing passenger jet in Portland, Oregon.

PORTER INAUGURATES NEW NONSTOP ROUTES CONNECTING MONTRÉAL AND CALIFORNIA:

Porter Airlines is launching two new seasonal, nonstop routes connecting Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The YUL-LAX route offers four-times weekly service beginning June 27, while the YUL-SFO route operates three-times weekly starting June 28.

ONE DAY STRIKE: Food service workers walk off the job at Vancouver airport

The union representing food service workers at Vancouver International Airport says more than 200 have walked off the job to push for higher wages. A statement from Unite Here Local 40 says the workers are employed by SSP America, which operates more than a dozen food outlets at the airport.

A Korean Air flight to Taiwan was forced to return to Incheon airport west of Seoul after a sudden depressurization on the plane, a Boeing 737 Max 8, the transport ministry said Tuesday. Separately, Malaysia Airlines said one of its flights en route to Bangkok on Monday made a U-turn back to Kuala Lumpur after the Airbus A-330 experienced a “pressurization issue.”

‘UNACCEPTABLE’: AA staff disciplined for removing black passengers from flight

American Airlines has put an unspecified number of employees on leave for their involvement in an incident in January in which several Black passengers were removed from a flight in Phoenix, allegedly over a complaint about body odor. American CEO Robert Isom wrote in a note to staff that the incident was unacceptable.

SEEDS OF HOPE: Transat sees the forest through the fires

Transat has pledged its support to Flash Forest, a Canadian aerial reforestation company whose mission is to rebuild healthy resilient forests at scale through a data-driven, biodiversity-centric, and community-led approach. By 2025, Transat says it will have helped finance the replanting of a forest devastated by wildfires, with over 70,000 trees or 48 hectares. This will allow for the sequestration of nearly 29,411 tonnes of CO2 over the course of the trees’ lifetime.

A new report says travellers are paying significantly more to fly within Canada during peak tourism season compared with last year, as limited capacity and competition outweigh easing demand to push up ticket costs. Prices for domestic flights in July through September rose 14 percent on average over the past 12 months, according to figures from the Flight Centre Travel Group.

AIRPORTS DEMAND MILLIONS FROM LYNX: Calgary owed the most

Airports are demanding $4.1 million in unpaid fees and debt from the defunct discount carrier Lynx Air, which already faces more than $200 million in claims from creditors. In court filings, authorities for the Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Halifax and Winnipeg airports asked for an order instructing Lynx to hand over airport improvement fees that the Alberta-based airline held in reserve.

MONTREAL INAUGURAL: Air Transat on the road to Marrakech

Air Transat operated its first flight between YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport to Marrakech-Menara International Airport (TS396) Wednesday night. The exclusive non-stop service, the only one between Canada and Marrakech, will operate year-round: twice weekly during the summer (until October) and once weekly during the winter (from November to April).

PORTER DOUBLES DOWN ON VEGAS, L.A. ROUTES

Citing strong demand, Porter Airlines says it is doubling capacity on its routes from Toronto Pearson to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, starting Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 respectively. Both cities will be served by twice daily flights on new 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES PAYS COMPENSATION TO TURBULENCE VICTIMS

Singapore Airlines has offered compensation to passengers of a flight that hit extreme turbulence last month, in a rare case that killed one passenger and injured dozens. The Being 777 jet, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew from London to Singapore, ran into sudden turbulence over the Irawaddy basin on May 20, hurling people and items around the cabin.

‘DISAPPOINTED’ WESTJET SAYS MECHANICS REJECTED DEAL

The union representing mechanics at WestJet says its members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative agreement with the airline. The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, which represents some 670 aircraft maintenance engineers and other skilled trade positions at the carrier, says about 97 percent of its members cast a ballot against the deal.
