TICO TALK: Virtual AGM date set, convictions, and more

The Travel Industry Council of Ontario is advising that its annual meeting of members will take place virtually on Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.

The meeting will include receiving the financial statements for the previous financial year, together with the Auditor’s Report; receiving and considering the Annual Report; appointing the auditors for the Corporation and authorizing the Board of Directors to fix the auditor’s remuneration; and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting.

Only members in good standing are entitled to participate in and vote at the meeting, while members of the public are invited to watch the event. More details and instructions will be provided in the official notice of meeting, which will be released at least 30 days prior to the meeting.

Written notice must be received by the Secretary on or before Aug. 11, 2023 of any motions to be made at the Annual Meeting.

Members who will not be attending the meeting are invited to submit written requests for proxies. Copies of the audited financial statements as at and for the fiscal period ended March 31, 2023 will be posted on TICO’s website in advance of the meeting or may be requested in writing prior to the meeting.

Other news

In other TICO news, 14 claims against the Compensation Fund have been approved totalling $51,809 to assist 24 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. They include:

• Active Journeys Inc. – 3 claims to assist 6 consumers, totalling $2,700
• Crystal Cruises – 5 claims to assist 8 consumers, totalling $25,174
• Luxury Travel Centre Inc. – claim to assist 2 consumers, totalling $2,640
• The 5700 Inc. – 1 claim to assist 2 consumers, totalling $1,795
• The Travel Broker Group Inc. – 1 claim to assist 1 consumer, totalling $5,000
• World Travel Inc. – 3 claims to assist 5 consumers, totalling $14,500

In addition, the following claims were denied:

• Jet Airways – One claim was denied as it was received beyond the legislated filing deadline date.
• Rejoice Holidays Inc. – One claim was denied as it did not contain documentation in order to support the claim; one claim was denied as the consumer cancelled a non-refundable ticket.
• World Travel Inc. – Three claims were denied as they lacked documentation and the non-provision of services was not due to the bankruptcy or insolvency of World Travel Inc.

And, TICO has charged Hameed M. Khan, operating as Ottawa Sports Tours, with one count of operating as a travel agent without being registered.
It is alleged that Hameed M. Khan sold travel packages, which included accommodations and tickets to professional football games in Buffalo, NY.
Hameed M. Khan will appear in court on July 13, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at 100 Constellation Dr. in Ottawa.
