STAYING IN TUNE WITH HARMONIOUS DOMINICA

By Michael Baginski/ As Dominica’s game-changing cable car – the longest detachable cable car in the world at 6.6 km. – prepares to open in December, the Caribbean island continues to aim high when it comes to tourism and punch above its weight with respect to its tiny size.

“We are a small island with a grand vision,” Discover Dominica Authority’s (DDA) CEO Marva Williams said at the recent CHTA Travel Marketplace in Antigua, adding, “Dominica continues to set itself apart in the Caribbean by investing in projects that expand access while preserving what makes the Nature Island so special.”

“We are redefining what it means to be a sustainable and green destination where nature is respected, where communities lead, where innovation fuels resilience, and where every traveller is transformed by the journey.”

As an example, the cable car will connect the Roseau Valley to the iconic Boiling Lake in just 20 minutes, transforming what is currently a six-hour hike into an accessible rainforest experience.

Other islands updates offered by Williams included:

  • A 10-megawatt geothermal plant is set to become operational by the end of 2025, supplying up to 50% of the country’s peak electricity demand – dramatically lowering energy costs and carbon emissions.
  • The US $201 million Cabrits Marina will welcome vessels up to 45 m. and feature a marine village with dining, shopping, and cultural experiences – all developed with a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
  • Dominica’s international airport is now 40% complete and remains on track for completion in 2027. The 2,850-m. runway and climate-resilient terminal will support direct flights from North America and Europe, vastly expanding the island’s visitor capacity.

“We are determined to be the Caribbean’s leading sustainable destination through nature, culture and innovations,” Williams declared. “With our upcoming cable car, expanded airlift, and progress on renewable energy and infrastructure, we are not just building for today, we are creating a more sustainable, connected, and resilient future for generations to come.

“Dominica is not just keeping pace with global trends, we are setting them,” she continued. “Dominica is a destination where nature, adventure, culture, and community, come together in perfect harmony.”

About Dominica and new campaign

Pronounced Dom-in-EEK-a, and not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica lies south of Guadeloupe and north of Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean. Known as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean,” Dominica boasts lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and natural wonders like Boiling Lake, one of the largest of its kind, and natural hot springs. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Waitukubuli National Trail, the Caribbean’s longest hiking trail, or swim or dive in the island’s pristine waters.

Piggybacking on being named one of the “Best Places in the World to Travel in 2026” by National Geographic, the DDA’s just-launched marketing campaign if aimed at nature lovers, couples, families, and solo travellers, positioning Dominica as a place to experience togetherness, personal renewal, and the beauty of pure nature.

“The Nature of Love campaign invites travellers to experience Dominica through meaningful connections,” said Williams. “Couples can find romance, families can reconnect, and solo travellers can focus on personal well-being. Our people, culture, and natural surroundings work together to create a sense of renewal that stays with visitors long after they leave.

“From a scenic hike to a soothing soak in our natural sulfur springs, Dominica offers unforgettable experiences, and we have exciting new developments this season that will continue to elevate the island as a leading tourism destination in the Caribbean and beyond,” she added.
