27 NOV 2017: The focus is “all things Italy.” Globus family of brands has roots firmly implanted in Italy’s la dolce vita. Nearly 90 years old, the popular travel company is a family-owned business headquartered in Ticino, the Italian-speaking side of Switzerland. And as one executive candidly noted, “It’s an Italian company run by the Swiss.”

Over a family-style Italian lunch of pizza, penne, and platters of pesce e carne (fish and meat), travel media guests tucked into a feast at the west-end trattoria, La Veranda to get the Globus inside scoop.

Away from the rabbling crowds of Black Friday shoppers in downtown Toronto, we veered off-the-beaten path. Then again, it was the ideal launch pad to learn about their new Italy programme, “Off the Beaten Piazza.”

Marco Sorbara, executive director of Europe for the Globus family of brands who is based in Lugano, Switzerland dished on “Off the Beaten Piazza,” and discussed how agents could offer clients more bang for their buck during off-season as well as combining other company travel products within the Globus family of brands resulting in more buying power.

Globus family of brands

The premier travel company has four travel brands: Globus, specializing in deluxe escorted motorcoach tours, Cosmos recognized for fun, friendly escorted motorcoach tours, Monograms, which offers packaged tours for independent travellers, and river cruises with Avalon Waterways.

On the heels of what’s in store for next year the exciting developments are indeed well positioned. In 2018 the global travel company celebrates its 90th birthday.

So yes, expect more Italy than ever before.

Rediscover your love for Italy

Perhaps clients have already stood inside the storied walls of the Colosseum in Rome or marvelled at the chiseled lines of the statue of David in Florence. Maybe, they have even cruised the romantic canals of Venice or sailed along Italy’s storied Amalfi coast.

The new 27-page booklet, Off the Beaten Piazza, showcases regions of Italy with all itineraries featuring detour trips to foodie havens. For example, in Southern Italy, clients can enjoy a lunch at a property owned by an Italian celebrity couple - Romina Power, the late American actor Tyrone Power’s daughter and Albano Carrisi, a popular singer, (unfortunately now divorced).

The new Off the Beaten Piazza sees the return of some popular itineraries but expect enhancements with unique twists like a private visit to the Papal summer residence.

Globus, for the first time ever, has become the exclusive tour operator with keys to the Vatican’s Castel Gandolfo. Located approximately 25 kilometres south of Rome, the historic 400-year-old landmark property is part of the 14-day Highlights of Sicily and Southern Italy itinerary from Globus.

Nestled in the history-rich Alban Hills, clients see the interior of the Papal summer residence, enjoy a garden tour via an open-air Popemobile inspired white train, see the Vatican’s farm producing olive oil from the estate’s olive trees, one dating back over a millennia and soak in the storied view overlooking the deep-blue Lake Albano.

For 2019, Sobara has plans to expand this exclusive private visit with a lunch inclusion at the Castel Gandolfo which will feature the Vatican’s farm products.

“Where else can you do this?” adds the affable Milanese-born director describing one of the countless one-of-a-kind experiences in the new programme.

Escapes by Globus

Off-season is money-saving time for clients who might like to visit the premiere destinations but at a fraction of the sticker price. Off-season also means milder temperatures compared to cold Canadian winters with fewer crowds.

From November through March, the new Escapes by Globus programme offers a 40 percent discount on select Globus itineraries for as low as $849 plus the single supplement is waived.

Itineraries include hotels with free Wi-fi in lobbies, select dining, transportation (Wi-Fi equipped motorcoach and/or ferry where specified) and guided sightseeing.

Monograms and Europe’s Big 5

The prepackaged vacation just got easier for independent minded travellers who don’t want to handle all the backend stuff.

For 2018, clients more prone to independent travel experiencing destinations on their own schedule, Monograms YourWay is a new customized program that allows for personalized stays from two to five nights in what the parent company describes as Europe’s five big cities: Rome, Florence, Venice, London and Paris.

A Monograms Local Host will offer hints and recommendations, steer clients off the beaten path and help maximize time, resulting in more time to explore.

It’s the logistics - point A to point B. Let’s say it’s figuring out the nitty-gritty at a train station in Europe. Globus family of brands has a Monograms Local Host ready to escort clients to their first class car.

“We really sell our Swiss expertise, all the stuff people don’t see in the back end,” explains Stéphanie
Bishop, managing director in Canada for Globus family of brands, on the beauty of this product where clients experience VIP treatment.

More Buying Power

Globus family of brands lets agents build programmes providing clients with more immersive trips by adding on a variety of combinations through its network of travel brands.

Think city getaways combo products from Italy to other destinations.

Lunch guests also heard how agents could add a Monograms component to a cruise package pre or post.

Example: For an Avalon Waterways cruise that ends in Basel, Switzerland consider adding on a Monograms extension with Zurich and Lake Como. Or for a Globus tour that ends in Milan, Italy consider a three night stay in Lake Como. “You have a lake view room,” says Sobara on the resort stay that guarantees lake views.

“The beauty in having these four brands is we can combine them and we can show you how you could add more.”
