‘SO YOUNG AND VIBRANT’: Remembering Brand USA Cdn director Casey Canevari

The travel industry on both sides of the border was shocked and devastated to learn of the sudden death of Brand USA’s popular Director of Global Trade Development (Canada) on Thursday. Canevari, a familiar figure amongst the trade in Canada, fell ill in Toronto at the start of Brand USA’s second annual trade mission to Canada on April 28, which was to also call in Montreal later in the week.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that, despite receiving the best possible care over the last four days in Toronto, Casey never regained consciousness and passed away peacefully yesterday, surrounded by his wife Christine, his three sons, his brother, cousin, and father-in-law,” said Brand USA’s Vice President Global Trade Jackie Ennis in a statement. “We are sharing this news with his family’s blessing, and they remain in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”

“Casey was a cherished member of our team and the industry – known for his boundless energy, optimism, and genuine warmth. His passion for travel and his unwavering commitment to welcoming Canadian visitors to the USA were evident in everything he did. He showed up time and again, even in recent months, never wavering in his dedication or spirit.”

“We understand how difficult this news may be, especially for those of you who knew Casey well. Our community is built on compassion, and we are here for one another. Thank you for your continued strength, care, and support during this deeply difficult time,” she concluded.

Having spent 20-plus years in travel and tourism, the Boston-based native of Warwick, New York, began his Brand USA role in 2022 as senior manager for the Canadian market and was promoted to director in February.

Prior to joining Brand USA, Canevari held positions at various DMOs, including time spent as a marketing manager at Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, where he was in the inaugural class of Destinations International’s 30 Under 30 program.

Sana Keller, president of Pulse Communications and Travel Marketing in Toronto, summed up a flood of condolences, writing on LinkedIn: “Heartbreaking news about our dear friend and fellow Board member on the Discover America Canada committee. Casey always had a smile on his face and loved the outdoors, always there to support and put Canada in the spotlight. My condolences to his wife and three sons who were his life.”

Sue Webb, president of Discover America Canada, and VoX international, called Canevari a “champion for travel to the USA (who) loved Canada. It is so devastating. He was so young and vibrant!”
